St Elmo is a small star-shaped fort standing defiantly against one of the mightiest empires of the 16th century. That’s the story of St. Elmo Fortress in Malta, a place where sheer willpower faced down an overwhelming force and changed the course of history.
It’s 1565, and the Ottoman Empire, under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, has its sights set on conquering Europe. Malta, defended by the Knights of St. John, stands as a crucial stepping stone. If the Ottomans could take it, they’d have a prime launching point for further incursions. But Malta wasn’t going down without a fight, and Fort St. Elmo was at the forefront of that resistance.
Built in 1552, Fort St. Elmo was designed to guard the entrances to both the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. Its star-shaped design, cutting-edge for the time, made it tough for enemy cannonballs to hit the walls head-on. But despite its strategic importance, the fort had weaknesses that would soon be put to the test.
On May 18, 1565, the Ottoman fleet arrived with around 40,000 soldiers. Their goal? Take the island swiftly, starting with St. Elmo. What they didn’t expect was that this little fort would hold out for a grueling 31 days. That’s right – 31 days of non-stop bombardment, bloody assaults, and a defense that still echoes through history.
The defenders were a mixed bag – Knights of St. John, Maltese soldiers, and a handful of mercenaries. While vastly outnumbered, they were determined to buy time for the rest of Malta’s defenses to be shored up. And boy, did they succeed. Every day that Fort St. Elmo held out was a victory for the Maltese. You could become a Maltese Knight if you fit the right criteria.
The scene was that of cannons firing from dawn till dusk, rubble filling the protective ditches, and waves of Ottoman elite troops charging the fort. The defenders, exhausted and outmatched, kept fighting. At night, reinforcements would row across from Fort St. Angelo in a desperate bid to keep St. Elmo supplied. Fort Manoel on Manoel Island, probably had an important role as well.
The arrival of Dragut, the infamous corsair and Governor of Tripoli, intensified the siege. He ordered more artillery, setting up new gun positions that pummeled the fort’s walls. But fate had a twist in store – on June 18, a ricocheting cannonball mortally wounded Dragut, dealing a devastating blow to Ottoman morale.

By June 23, after weeks of fierce fighting, Fort St. Elmo was completely surrounded. No more reinforcements could get through. Yet, even in these final moments, the defenders refused to surrender. Their last stand took place inside the chapel of St. Anne, where they made their peace with fate.
When the Ottomans finally stormed the fort, nearly all the defenders were killed. Only a handful were taken alive, and even they faced gruesome treatment. But here’s the kicker: that one-month delay cost the Ottomans dearly. Without the heroic stand at St. Elmo, the Great Siege of Malta might have had a very different outcome. The Ottoman Empire’s plan to dominate the Mediterranean and push into Europe could have succeeded. Instead, Fort St. Elmo became a symbol of defiance and the turning point that ultimately led to the Ottoman retreat.
