Dear readers,

I’m thrilled to invite you on an extraordinary journey through time—one that spans over 7,000 years of Mediterranean history through the watchful eyes of an ancient spirit. Il-Ħares , is a ten-chapter historical fiction series that brings the rich tapestry of Maltese history to life in a way you’ve never experienced before.

Meet Il-Ħares: The Spirit of Malta

At the heart of this series is Il-Ħares (pronounced eel-HAH-res), the mythological guardian spirit of the Maltese islands. The name itself holds special significance—”Ħares” in Maltese means “to guard” or “to watch over.” The distinctive “Ħ” character (with a horizontal line through the top) represents a sound unique to Maltese—a guttural “H” that originates deep in the throat, connecting the modern language to its ancient Semitic roots.

While Il-Ħares isn’t a figure from traditional Maltese mythology, our story imagines this entity as having been born from the very limestone and seawater that form these islands. Il-Ħares awakens to consciousness through the rituals and devotion of Malta’s first temple builders and continues to observe and occasionally influence the island’s destiny through millennia of triumphs and tribulations.

A Literary Journey Through Time

Il-Ħares speaks directly to you, the reader, with observations that span thousands of years of human experience.

More Than Just History

This isn’t merely a retelling of historical events. Through Il-Ħares’s eyes, we experience intimate moments with both ordinary Maltese people and influential historical figures. We witness temples rise stone by stone, feel the terror of siege warfare, experience the devastation of bombing raids, and share in the pride of independence and European integration.

While meticulously researched and historically grounded, this series also explores timeless themes: resilience in the face of overwhelming odds, the preservation of identity despite waves of foreign influence, and the enduring connection between people and their homeland.

The Maltese Language: A Living Fossil

Throughout the series, you’ll encounter elements of the fascinating Maltese language—the only Semitic language written in Latin script and the only Semitic language that’s an official language of the European Union. With roots in ancient Phoenician and Arabic, heavily influenced by Sicilian, Italian, and English, Maltese embodies the island’s history of cultural exchange and resilience.

The special letter “Ħ” that appears in Il-Ħares is just one of the unique characters in the Maltese alphabet that reflect the language’s distinctive sounds and heritage. As Il-Ħares observes: “My name carries the breath of the sirocco wind and the echo of ancient prayers.”
