What it is
European Archaeology Days is the Europe-wide weekend that opens national archaeological collections free of charge. Heritage Malta's contribution is a pair of curator-led tours at the National Museum of Archaeology in the Auberge de Provence on Republic Street, Valletta — the elegant 1571 Knights' lodging now devoted to Malta's prehistoric past.
Tours run on Saturday 13 June and Sunday 14 June 2026, 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. The curator walks small groups through the permanent display (Ggantija pottery, the Sleeping Lady, the Venus of Malta) and then opens two areas the public doesn't usually see: the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum skull collection, and the Reserve Collection — Greek vases, Punic inscriptions, Roman stelae held in storage.
Free entry but advance booking is essential — the tour caps at around 25 people per slot. Booking is via Heritage Malta. Bring an ID for the reserve-collection room.
