What it is
Opera in the Capital is the open-air gala that closes the Mnarja weekend in Valletta. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra sets up on St George's Square in front of the Grandmaster's Palace, with three Maltese soloists carrying the programme: tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens, baritone Alan Sciberras, and mezzo-soprano Marvic Monreal. Ryan Paul Abela conducts.
The 2026 edition is on Saturday 27 June, 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm. The programme is built around the popular arias — Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Mozart — plus duets and orchestral interludes. Free, no booking, no fenced seating; pick your spot anywhere on the square.
Best sightlines are from the Palace steps and the western edge of the square. Bring something to sit on. Republic Street fills from 7:30 pm; the cafés around the square keep their tables out, but service slows to a crawl once the concert starts.
