What it is
Sette Giugno (7 June) is a Maltese national holiday commemorating the events of 7 June 1919. The day is marked by an official ceremony at the Sette Giugno monument on St George's Square in Valletta -- in front of the Grandmaster's Palace. Expect the Speaker of the House to lay a wreath, followed by speeches and the national anthem. Plan to arrive 30-45 minutes early if you want a clear view of the square.
The rest of the day is informal. Government offices, banks and post offices are closed; supermarkets and tourist sites stay open on holiday hours. Cafes around St George's Square (Caffe Cordina, Cafe Society) keep their tables out.
